Devanagari Lesson 2 Review
In this lesson you learned your first Devanagari letters. You also learned some more rules that govern how the letters create words in Hindi.
- क makes the
ka
sound. - य makes the
ya
sound. - र makes the
ra
sound. - म makes the
ma
sound. - Although each Devanagari letter forms a syllable of a word, the last letter is usually pronounced without the
a
sound.
Now that we've reviewed the what we've covered, let's read a (very) short dialogue (with characters from Snell). When pronouncing the Hindi names, don't forget the rules for Devanagari sounds using English letters we've chosen.
- Rām: HELLO, UमĀ. ☑ Answer
- Umā: HELLO, रĀम. HOW AरE यOU? ☑ Answer
- Rām: I Aम FINE, UमĀ. WHAT AरE यOU DOING? ☑ Answer
- Umā: I Aम मAकING A रESUमÉ. ☑ Answer
Note that the names may not have the same spelling you're used to. You may have seen the name Rām spelled Ram
or even Raam
. That's because, as we discussed earlier, there is no single correct
representation of Hindi sounds. Here I've used the same rules for representation that I use throughout this tutorial for consistency and to remove ambiguity. Just be aware that, if you have a friend named Rām or Umā, they may spell their name differently in English than what you see here.
